Anyone want my salad?

The lettuce was less than delicious. I don't know if it's something I did with growing it, or if it's just the taste of that particular lettuce species.
IT WAS AWFUL.
Bitter, not crunchy the way fresh iceberg is...gross. Geoff didn't even eat it, and that man will usually choke down anything I fix him.
Shoot.

Well, part of the reason I didn't eat it--besides the taste--was just the idea that we had grown it outside. After all, we saw a snake in the vegetable patch, mice have probably run around them, and rabbits may have nibbled on the lettuce for all we know. Then you have to consider that the lettuce was rained on, sat in the heat a lot, was shaken up by any wind going by. I'd rather all of my fruits and vegetables avoid all of that outdoor stuff and be hand-picked from inside a store.

(Rolling eyes at Geoff's comment)

Iceberg lettuce has no taste at all - it's nothing but water.

Proper home-grown lettuce is yummy - toss with a nice raspberry vinaigrette.

Maybe you didn't water it enough - that's why it's bitter? Could be the variety, who knows.

Send it my way - the bunnies will make quick work of it, but they like strong tasting stuff.

I think Laura pointed out the problem. Lettuce loves cool weather, and it's a very hot mid-July. Maybe you could plant a fall crop that will be ready before the first frost.

Nice try, though! We should all try to eat food grown close to home. It seems to require almost a heroic effort for many of us these days, but it's a noble goal.
