And what a good deal I got. I now have a Canon PowerShot S31S. It takes GREAT still photos, has image stabilization, movies with stereo sound, and has like a million features that I will thoroughly enjoy discovering. All my RAPTOR work is coming in very handy. And I think I put it to good use, getting a really cool camera so I can wow all of you.
How's this for my first photo op with a new camera? A red-shouldered hawk was just sitting on the fence as I pulled into the driveway. ID tip for red-shouldered hawks versus red-tailed hawks: RT's have darker streaking on a lighter chest. The streaks on a RS are horizontal and on Rt's they are vertical. RS's have a longer, banded tail, and RT's have a short, chunky red tail. And RS's have red shoulders.
Another sweet shot. A white-throated sparrow cleaning up under one of the feeders.
Grapes on a cherry tree: I put out some past-their-prime grapes on my weeping cherry tree, and it looks as if someone has been enjoying them.
One of our male cardinals. Sad to say that yesterday, filling the feeders, I found scarlet feathers in a pile under the crabapple tree. The cooper's hawk strikes again.

Wow! Impressive first pics. I tried to get some pics today of the birds and squirrel at the feeders, but as soon as the camera came out they disappeared.

Thanks for the i.d.-ing tips, Susan, keep 'em coming! Not everybody who loves birdwatching is an expert, and I can use all the help I can get figuring out what I'm looking at.
Great photos! You will really be camera-happy now testing all the bells and whistles. My camera is only a year old and it's just OK...I'd like a fancier one. I can't get close enough to my feeders to get decent photos of some nice birds.

Cardinals are one of my favorites. That was a great pic of the hawk.
