Trixie has officially earned her keep

Mouse update: Tonight Trixie caught a mouse. I was sitting here and I heard a squeak. Looking down, Trixie was running past my feet with a little gray mouse in her mouth. I praised her extensively, got a plastic bag and pulled it from her mouth. It was in it's death throes as I sealed it in the bag and threw it away outside.
Good girl, Trix!

What has me puzzled is that this was a deer or field mouse: gray above, white below. The ones I have live-caught were brown house mice, uniformly brown all over. Hmmm...are there two colonies of different species living in here?

Regardless, for the first time I am really proud of Trixie. If there's one cat in our household capable of catching a mouse, it's her. She was a stray when we found her. Queen was also, but that was 10 years ago and she has as much prey drive and stamina as a slug.

I got scolded on another blog for saying this, but I hope you don't let your cats kill wild things outside. Domestic cats can really hurt populations of native birds and mammals.

Mojoman: No worries...all four are inside cats.
I feel so strongly about people letting their cats run free I try to catch them. I haven't caught any yet, but when I do, I plan on attaching notes telling their owners how cats lower bird populations and why they should keep their cats inside. Won't they just love that?
