Houston, Susan Gets Native has landed

I am here. I am so happy, I could spit.
The drive was long, but as I got closer to Port Clinton I started noticing the birdscape was changing. Starlings were replaced by red-winged blackbirds. Great blue herons replaced soaring vultures.
I knew I was close when, along the roadside, maybe 5 feet from the road, stood a great egret. Oh, Hell, YEAH.
Okay, I teared up a little. Well, maybe more than a little.

This picture is strictly for Geoff. The man has a very bizarre love affair with rest areas.

The town of Cygnet is about 20 miles from Port Clinton. Seeing this sign always makes me smile, because I know I have crossed into Lake Erie country.
Room with a view
How's that for a view? I have views of Lake Erie on two sides of my hotel room.
Somewhere beyond that horizon is Canada.
Sunset over Lake Erie
Here's the sunset over the lake, taken from the deck right under my room.
Hot Tub
And here's the hot tub.
Can I get an "Amen"?
I have already tried it, and it's as wonderful as you can imagine.

Right now, I am sitting in my "balcony room" with the windows open, listening to the surf crashing below and the gulls riding the waves.
The wind is strong and chilly. Good weather for sleeping with the windows open, just a little.

I took this before I left today.
Look, guys!
Swallow PORN!!!
(At least he kissed her first.)

I'm glad you're having fun, honey. Just don't spit on our laptop, and I hope you get a gazillion life birds tomorrow. And it's not a bizarre love affair I have for rest areas. I just think it's a great example of what our country offers the traveler--a haven for the weary, and it's always in a scenic little spot, where you can people watch and see all sorts of slices of Americana. As I've said before, someday I hope I can write a coffee table book called "Rest Areas of America" and... OK, you're right. This is sort of bizarre...

Bizarre indeed.

And what's with you bird people and all the porn shots? Nobody else can get away with all that.

Sigh...

Have a WONDERFUL time in the hot tub and everywhere else. I envy you....but then again, I am The Queen. It's probably not ladylike to envy...

Amen, Sister! That would be my first stop in the hotel room!

And you have totally won over my DH with the the caption for the breeding birds.
Have a great time.

Susan Gets Native is on vacation! Don't ya wish you had a week?

Rest Areas are creepy, I think.

Love the bird porn - hard to resist when they get it on right before you eyes, isn't it?

Have a great time.

Can't even begin to describe my jealousy over your hotel room with its own hot tub. I'd just be sitting in there all the time with a glass of wine and then I'd make up a lot of stories about lifebirds. :)

Swallow pron! Love it!

Bird Trip Update: Susan called me today. She's having the time of her life, and has lost count on how many "life birds" she's seen. She is writing everything down in one of her bird books, so she'll be able to figure it out eventually. I think she's going to be blogging about this trip for weeks...

Love your hotel room! On my trip to Magee Marsh last May, I stayed at a nice enough place, but no hot tub or "ocean" view. Where is that place? I wanna stay there next spring!

~Kathi, who has tree swallow porn happening in her yard, too

My wife and I lived in Sandusky for a few years, so it was nice to see your photos of the lake. Hope you had a productive trip to Erie County...
