Independence Day

It's not quite Independence Day, but my bluebirds decided to break free of their oppressive shells this morning.

This is simply the best thing I have seen in a long time. Three little scrawny necks, three little begging mouths, three sweet little bluebirds.

The fourth one is trying to hatch. Here we go with my brilliant close-up photography. See how clear the trees are behind my hand? Well, anyway, the fourth egg has a little burst of cracks to the right of the shiny part, if you can make it out. If I am able to be out there and not bother the parents, I will try to document the fourth one hatching.

The thing that is weighing heavily on my mind is that the GD house sparrows are trying to build a nest in the purple martin house, which is not far from the bluebirds. If they get frustrated, they may come in and kill the bluebird babies and build a nest over their corpses. For the last time, SEE WHY I HATE HOUSE SPARROWS? They are a real danger to the nestlings.

I just found your web site, very nice. I am amused at the description of birding with kids. I feed the birds in my garden, have a few bird houses for nesting, a few birdbaths and am always happy to have yellow finches and hummingbirds around. Otherwise, I'm not much of a 'birder'. I'd love to find more time to study about birds

Carol,
Thanks for visiting! Please feel free to come back again!
Birding is so rewarding. They are everywhere when you become aware of them. My girls are my "junior birders" and they get a big kick out of all the activity on our property.
Hope you get the time to learn more...and once you are into birds, there's no turning back. It's wonderful.

Those little baby birdbirds are cute. I don't think I have ever seen a baby bluebird, they are rare enough around here in the adult form. I hope the sparrows will leave them alone. Darn sparrows. :(

Thanks for stopping by my garden blog and leaving a comment.

How exciting!

Love your comments on your close-up photography! Maybe you just need longer arms - lol!

Have you got the mealworms ready?

Oh, yes...got a new mealworm feeder that they are already used to, and the lovely woman at the bird store gave me a free cup of the little squirmies. I really don't like to touch bugs, so I let Isabelle do it for me.
